Top 4 Nutrient Deficiencies

November 30th, 2014 | by

Most likely you’ve heard that the human body needs ample vitamins and minerals to help perform at optimal level. Back many years ago when the earth’s soil was healthier than it is today, the crops grown had a lot of nutrients in it, but today the soil is lacking in quality.  When you use harmful chemicals and fertilizer to grow food, those chemicals can deplete the soil of helpful nutrients.

Additionally, not everyone eats the right types of foods in order to get the essential nutrients that the body needs.  Here are some of the top nutrients that are lacking in people, as well as how you can add more of such nutrients to your diet.

  1. The thyroid relies some on the trace mineral iodine for good health health. When the body is starving for iodine, you could end up with hypothyroidism or a goiter.  If you’ve given up table salt, you might be lacking in iodine, as table salt has the minimum required dose we need. In order to get some iodine in your diet, eat plenty of seafood, including seaweed and kelp. You may also supplement iodine.
  2. This is a mineral that your body needs for optimal health, but may be missing due to poor soil quality. Selenium helps your thyroid hormone synthesis, so if you are not getting enough of it, you could be battling some thyroid problems. To get more in your diet, eat more salmon, Brazil nuts, shiitake mushrooms, shrimp, and egg yolks.  You may also use supplements.
  3. Lack of magnesium in the body can result in type 2 diabetes, constipation, hypertension, migraines, fibromyalgia, and more. The reason we do not get enough magnesium for the most part is from poor soil quality and not eating enough plant foods. Add leafy green vegetables to your diet, nuts, mineral water, and adding chelated magnesium supplements is a good idea as well.
  4. Vitamin B12. You’ve probably heard of B12 here and there, but do you realize that many common body complaints are due to a lack of B12? Yes, if you’re feeling fatigued, sad, or anxious, it could be due to a nutrient deficiency such as B12. How can you add more to your diet? Eat more salmon, sardines, and liver.  You can also add a daily B12 supplement to your diet.

It is important to feed your body the vitamins and minerals it needs in order to feel good and enjoy good health.  Add some exercise to eating healthy and you’ll feel amazing.  Continue to learn about vitamins and minerals, so you can be sure that your body is not deficient in any.
